Alistair Nicholas Consulting
Australia-based international business consultant specialising in government relations, corporate and public affairs, public relations, issues and crisis management, and international trade and investment
Based in Sydney, Australia, I am an internationally experienced business and communications consultant who has advised multinational corporations and national and state governments on a range of complex and sensitive issues. Within Australia I focus on government affairs, policy and regulatory matters, foreign investment, public relations, media relations, corporate affairs, and issues and crisis management. I also help companies doing business in China based on my two decades of experience working with the Peoples Republic of China, including being based in Beijing for 13 years. For a more detailed biography scroll down or visit my Linkedin profile via the link at the bottom of this page.
My guarantee to my clients is professionalism, experience and availability. The difference between Alistair Nicholas Consulting and a major public affairs or lobbying firm is I don't push work "down the pyramid" to inexperienced junior consultants. I make no bones about the fact that I am a one-person consultancy. When you engage Alistair Nicholas Consulting you are engaging me and I guarantee my time - including my profesionalism, experience and accessibility - on your account. You get my full attention.
Of course, I cannot do everything myself. There may be times when I may need to bring in a specific expert or "on the ground support" in a particular market. I have a wide network of associates in Australia and internationally that I can call upon when their specialist skills and experience might be required. These are professionals I have come to know over 35 years working in Australia, North America, Europe, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, China and much of Asia. Like me, these are owners of their own businesses with "skin in the game".
I comply with the laws, regulations and codes of conduct of all federal, state and territory jurisdictions in which I operate, including listing of clients on relevant lobbyist registers, and with the Foreign Influence Transparency Scheme (FITS). For further information with regard to these, please see the Australian Government's Lobbying Code of Conduct and FITS.
I have more than 35 years experience in government and corporate affairs covering Australia, North America, China, Asia and the Pacific. The past 20 years were spent in senior advisory roles with international consulting companies Edelman and Weber Shandwick/Powell Tate, including 13 years living and working in Beijing. In particular I have advised foreign companies on doing business in China and I have advised Chinese organisations on doing business in Western countries, including in relation to financial market listings and foreign investment approvals.
Among my past clients, I count Global Fortune 500 companies, sovereign wealth funds, Chinese State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) and China's leading private companies, national governments and their embassies, multilateral institutions, small and medium sized companies, and non-government organisations including industry associations and charities.
My consultancy work includes government relations, reputation management, stakeholder engagement, public relations, media relations, and issues and crisis management.
My early career included policy research and journalism, international trade policy and political advice to Australia's Federal Coalition, and diplomacy including as Australia's Trade Commissioner to the World Bank and United Nations.
One of the things I believe in strongly is giving back to society. My current voluntary roles in Chair of international charity Welcome To My Yard, a member of the College Council of Warrane College at the University of New South Wales, and a member of the Private Sector Advisory Panel to the China Business Research Network of Macquarie University.
My qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of New South Wales and a Certificate in Executive Leadership from Cornell University.
